Georgina Goes Batty

Launching Thursday, April 17
Georgina Public Libraries is thrilled to announce it’s first annual “One Book” program. The theme for this year is “Georgina Goes Batty”. A great theme for a great book!
“Silverwing” by Kenneth Oppel.
When Shade Silverwing breaks an age-old law, looking at the sun, his home is burned to the ground by a group of owls. Then he is blown out to sea and makes a friend with a Brightwing, named Marina, who has a band on her arm, who wants to meet the elder, Frieda, who also has a band. They run into some strange bats: Zephyr, a mystical albino with great hearing, Goth and Throbb, two giant bats from the jungle, and Scirocco, a bat intent on becoming human. Shade will have to go through a test of willpower and strength if he ever wants to see his colony again.
We invite Grade 5 teachers and students to join the cause and read along with us. Grade 5 students and their teachers will be invited to visit Kenneth Oppel on Friday, November 14, 2008
for an author reading.
Invitations will be sent out in early September

Regrettably, space will be limited, therefore, seats will be held on a first response basis.

READING CIRCLES AT EVERY LIBRARY BRANCH

The library is thrilled to introduce Reading Circles - a fantastic way to share the love of reading and books with your family in a creative way.

Reading Circles are about bringing families with school-age children together for an hour of shared reading activities that will include group reading, being read to, one-on-one literacy games and buddy reading. Reading Circles will be explained in detail on your first visit. A great part of a Reading Circle's success in you and the volunteers we've recruited. Hope to see you there!

Please pick-up a Reading Circle schedule at a branch near you or check it out on the library's website.

Have you read 52 books?

BOOK TRACKERS

If you are reading on your own then you can be a Book Tracker. For every 5 books you've read you will collect 2 beads towards a total of 20 beads (with a special bead at the end). The beads are assembled on a colourful cord to make a Book Thong. Your Book Thong is kept at the library until you've completed it and then you can start all over again! There's more....once you've read 52 books you can choose a book from the Children's Collection to have dedicated in your name and....pick a special bead for your thong and....choose a prize from the prize chest!
Come in today and pick-up a Book Tracker's book log.

Read a Tumble Book on line (available on the library's website--it counts!
